Five Factors That Assist In Caring For Dental Implants

Dental implants are used when teeth have decayed or been damaged and have had to be removed. Rather than continuing to function with a hole in their teeth, patients who have had had one of more teeth pulled above have the option to engage with dental implants. Dental implants are referred to as either crowns or bridges, depending on the number of artificial teeth that are present. One implant is called a crown and multiple implants attached to one socket are called a bridge. Caring for dental implants is incredibly important to maintain the appearance of natural teeth and ensure further damage does not occur to the mouth tissues.

In this blog post we discuss five factors that contribute to effective care for dental crowns and dental bridges.

1. Proper Bone Support

Regardless of whether it is a crown or a bridge, dental implants use supporting jaw bone structures to remain firmly lodged in place. During the implant procedure, doctors will screw a socket into the jawbone: into the gap that the removed tooth used to occupy.  This of course relies on strong bone support and means that only adults with fully-formed jaw bones may undergo dental implant procedures.

2. Effective Oral Health Self Care

Implanting artificial teeth into the jawbone requires good overall health to be a success. Once the tooth has been implanted, good oral healthcare must ensue to ensure the implant retains its natural look. Furthermore, brushing and flossing regularly means that food particles and other detritus don’t get stuck in the teeth to wear down enamel and cause further problems with the teeth and gums.

3. Healthy Gums

Strong gums support new implants that fuse together with the jawbone. Thus, patients who have periodontal disease often face implant surgery failure. Be sure to scrub your gums when brushing, particularly around the roots of the teeth to ensure they stay shiny and pink.

4. Get Routine Check-Ups

Most dentists recommend getting a check-up every six months. Scheduling a general check-up (a scale and clean) is crucial to ensuring good oral health and making sure that teeth remain healthy and look attractive. During your regular check-up, your dentist will give you advice on how to look after your teeth properly. They will identify any weaknesses in your oral health care strategy and will help you achieve a proper standard of oral healthcare.

5. Don’t Grind Your Jaw

If you are prone to face clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) it’s worth scheduling a visit to your local dentist who will take a look. While these problems do not enjoy a one-size-fits-all solution, there are certainly alternatives out there to help you with your condition. Face clenching and bruxism can have a really terrible impact on the sustainability of your dental implants, so be sure to care for them in this regard if you suffer from one of the two problems listed above.
